Essential B Vitamins necessary for optimal energy, metabolism and blood building

Clear

Equestrizone B-Complex Vitamins are a reliable source of essential B vitamins for horses necessary for optimal energy metabolism and blood building.

Healthy horses fed plenty of forage have an internal supply of B complex vitamins from their digestive tract microbial fermentation processes. It’s not known, however, if they always receive enough for optimal health and it is unlikely in the case of working horses. Horses without healthy gut fermentation and especially those fed too little fibre are likely to be short of essential B complex vitamins.

Ill horses and those recovering after illness will benefit from B complex vitamin supplementation because their internal supply may be inadequate. If liver function is compromised for any reason, supplementary B complex vitamins for horses should be fed.

B complex vitamins and particularly thiamine have been successfully used to boost appetite in hard-working horses, and are also thought to improve cellular energy production. The effect is likely to be particularly important in horses on low forage-diets. Thiamine is essential in energy transfer, particularly in carbohydrate metabolism, and for nervous system function.
B-Complex Vitamins contains these active ingredients:

  • Thiamine (B1)
  • Riboflavin (B2)
  • Pyridoxine (B6)
  • Niacin (B3)
  • Pantothenic acid
  • Folic acid
  • Choline
  • Cobalamin (B12)
  • Biotin

Equestrizone B-Complex Vitamins can be safely supplemented to any horse or pony whose internal supply might not be adequate, and they are a must for ill horses, recovering horses and hard-working horses.

Feed to:

  • Horses with digestive disturbance
  • Horses with compromised liver function
  • Horses with a poor appetite
  • Ill horses and those in recovery
  • Working horses who do not require fortified compound feed

The word vitamin comes from ‘vital amines’ and they were discovered as essential around 100 years ago. Vitamins are required only in tiny amounts, but this does not reflect their importance. Without adequate intake of vitamins, horses suffer deficiency symptoms.

Vitamins have a variety of functions, and a variety of different compounds can have vitamin activity. Vitamins are classified as water-soluble or fat-soluble, which describes how the body handles them. B complex vitamins and vitamin C are water soluble, whereas vitamins E, A, D and K are fat soluble. Water soluble vitamins like B complex are absorbed from the gut into the blood that travels to the liver, and are not retained in the body for long.

Most of the B complex vitamins for horses are involved in either energy releasing roles in the body, or blood building (hematopoietic). Vitamins B6 and B12, folates and pantothenic acid have hematopoietic roles, and vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, pantothenic acid and biotin have roles in energy metabolism.

B vitamins for horses cannot be retained in the body – unlike other vitamins like vitamin A – and they are excreted in the urine when blood levels exceed a certain threshold. This makes them very safe to feed, but it also means that a constant supply is required if deficiency is to be avoided. Thiamine reserves are believed to last only 1-2 weeks in horses.

Healthy horses fed plenty of forage have an internal supply of B complex vitamins from digestive tract microbial fermentation processes. It’s not known, however, if they always receive enough for optimal health and it is unlikely in the case of working horses.
