Cinnamon for horses is a warming, aromatic spice made from the inner bark of a variety of cinnamon tree species. It’s an ancient, well-known spice that has been used worldwide for centuries for its characteristic aroma, taste and biological activity.

Cinnamon powder contains essential oils as well as other constituents, and it’s the oils that are believed to give it its biological activity. Cinnamon is used to support gastrointestinal health, and to support blood glucose balance. It is under investigation by scientific researchers for its action on blood glucose and insulin. It also has a balancing effect on vascular function.

Cinnamon is an ideal supplement for obese horses and ponies on weight-loss programmes, those with metabolic challenges and those who benefit from blood glucose balancing and insulin-sensitising.

Horses enjoy the taste of cinnamon and it is sometimes used as flavouring for supplements. It can be used as a palatability aid as well as for its supportive properties.
Cinnamon contains:

  • Essential oils including cinnamaldehyde and polyphenols
  • Flavonoids – procyanidins and catechins
  • Gum, mucilage, resins and sugars

Cinnamon is a warming, aromatic spice made from the bark of a number of species of cinnamon tree and is one of the most important and popular spices used globally. Historically, its use goes back a long way with a mention in the bible and in Chinese medical literature from thousands of years ago. Cinnamon is widely used for its aroma in food, chewing gum, perfumes and medicinal products, as well as in herbal medicine. It’s available dried as a powder or in a rolled form called a quill (cinnamon stick).

Cinnamon contain up to 4% volatile oils, which give it its characteristic aroma and its biological properties. It also contains:

  • Calcium oxalate
  • Coumarin, cinnzeylanin and cinnzeylanol
  • Flavonoids – procyanidins and catechins
  • Gums, mucilage, resins and sugars

The essential oils consist of mainly cinnamaldehyde and trans-cinnamaldehyde (about 60-75%) along with benzaldehyde, cuminaldehyde, phenols including eugenol, and a variety of other oils in smaller quantities.

Traditionally, cinnamon has been widely used for gastrointestinal support, and as a warming spice for respiratory challenges. It’s under investigation for a variety of medicinal uses, with plenty of research papers already published.

Several research studies have shown that cinnamon lowers blood glucose and cholesterol and a substance it contains has been termed ‘insulin-potentiating factor (IPF)’. It appears to have an insulin-sensitising action and it’s thought that this effect may be due to its potent antioxidant activity. Cinnamon is used in the food industry in place of artificial preservatives.

Cinnamon for horses is also under investigation for its balancing effects on vascular function, its ability to support the body’s natural anti-inflammatory processes, and its effects on neurological health.
