Chemical compounds in hawthorn help to maintain elasticity in the blood vessel walls allowing them to flex easily and thereby also promoting good blood flow and circulation which benefits any horses taking part in vigorous exercise and activity. A flavonoid called rutin helps with this process and also helps re-build the collagen fibres that maintain the outer layers of the blood vessels.

Other chemical components contained in hawthorn are able to override enzymes that constrict blood vessels as a way of moving blood around the body. This means that the blood vessels are kept open improving circulation. This action is particularly important if blood vessels have become narrowed by being clogged with fat or calcium deposits.

Hawthorn for horses is also a safe and effective fluid balancer, which gently relieves the body of excess water and has been used to support healthy function of the kidneys and bladder when affected by stones.

Hawthorn is rich in antioxidants, and the triperpene acids it contains can support healthy blood pressure. Hawthorn can also play a part in supporting healthy cholesterol levels.

There are said to be more than 1,000 different species of hawthorn and hawthorn hybrids. They are native to the temperate regions of Europe, Asia and North America.

Equestrizone Hawthorn is Crataegus laevigata – one of the most commonly-used species of hawthorn used in herbal medicine. Crataegus laevigata, is also known as midland hawthorn or mayflower. The first Pilgrims who emigrated to America named their boat The Mayflower after using hawthorn wood to make some of the vessel. The bread and butter tree is another name, which came from an ancient farmers’ practice of nibbling on the leaves and flowers in order to take the edge off their hunger before breakfast. The oxygen that hawthorn releases would have also helped them feel less tired.

In the spring horses can often be seen eating leaves off hawthorn trees. It is one of those trees, or plants, that many horses seem to be instinctively drawn to because of its benefits.
